To take care of tons of emails and web-upadates I went to the Forum Guest house in the morning. But I ended up chatting with Christoph and other critics as my diligent intent had disappeared. Then I saw “Man Tannker Sitt (Burrowing)” by Fredrik Wenzel & Henrik Hellstrom with Tsunami-san, Forum’s volunteer translator. The film was fascinating with stunning color of the earth, and nature, and the skin tone of the protagonist boy. The story takes place in a Swedish suburbs and portrays the ensembles of depressed lonely residents. The film was very bold to depict the troubled psychos by visuals without any explanation. After having a German lunch near Cinestar I had an interview by Rüdiger Suchsland, a Berlin-based film critic writing for Filmdienst. He questioned, “There seems to be a huge gap between Ozu, Mizoguchi, Kurosawa and the modern Japanese cinema nowadays. What do you think of it?” I wasn’t sure exactly what he meant. But the question surprised, or almost overwhelmed me.
Then I attended the closing ceremony for the Golden Bear. “The Milk of Sorrow” won it. Viewing the award ceremony was quite entertaining and the party afterwards was massive!
